The Center established in 2011 by the Order of the Moscow State University (MSU) Rector following the decision of the Academic Board and in compliance with Regulation #2226-r of the Russian Federation Government dated December 8, 2010. The establishment of the Center is the response of the Russian Federation to L’Aquila Food Security Initiative proposed at the G8 Summit in Aquila (Italy, 2009). The Initiative prioritizes food security and agricultural sustainability as major policy developments at the global, regional and national levels. In addition to G8 members, more than 40 countries supported the Initiative, as well as leading international agencies involved in agriculture, food security and nutrition. In 2011, the Russian Federation allocated funds to support the programs of Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and activities of the MSU Eurasian Center for Food Security.
The MSU Eurasian Center on Food Security is seeking to promote food security in Central Asia and South Caucasus, considering the importance of economic and social stability of these regions for the Russian Federation. The top priority countries in the region are Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia, where food security is in critical condition. The Center develops expertise, performs analytical work, undertakes research using in-house and outside resources, performs educational activities, and coordinates intergovernmental research and development studies.
The MSU Eurasian Center for Food Security pursues its activities in partnerships with the leading international centers, such as Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Bank, Institutes and Centers under the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), International Foundation for Agricultural Development (IFAD), International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR), Central Asia and Caucasus Association of Agricultural Research Institutes (CACAARI), and the Russian research centers, such as Dokuchayev Soil Institute, the Russian Agricultural Economic Research and Development Institute, etc.
