Soils are essential fto life on Earth. Their protection is of utmost importance to ensure the future of food systems and the provision of key ecosystem services.  The increasing anthropogenic burden disrupts the delivery of fundamental functions by soils.  Unsustainable land management, urbanization, deforestation and forest fires, pollution lead to the loss of the basic properties and biological diversity of soils.

The World Soil Day is celebrated annually on 5 December to highlight the important contribution of soils and promote the sustainable use of soil resources. The theme of the World Soil Day in 2020 is: Keep soil alive, protect soil biodiversity

The FAO Liaison Office with the Russian Federation, the Eurasian Center for Food Security of the Lomonosov Moscow State University, the World Bank and the Russian State Agrarian University – Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy (RSAU-MTAA), together with other partner organizations, have been organizing WSD-dedicated scientific and practical conferences on food security and soil science since 2016. The events have been held jointly with leading science, research and education institutions of the Russian Federation with the aim of exchanging experiences and knowledge, and strengthening cooperation among scientists, researchers, government officials, agribusiness and non-profit organizations to address practical and applied problems.
